Women & Diaconal Ministry Conference Re-cap Scheduled

Conference Re-Cap On Saturday, February 21st at 4 PM there will be a re-cap of “Women & Diaconal Ministry: Past, Present & Future” Conference, originally held December 6, 2014 in Manhattan and hosted by the St. Phoebe Center for the History of the Deaconess. Join St. Phoebe founder, Ann Marie Mecera, Caren Stayer, PhD (presenter and Board member), with reflections from Fr. Daniel Rentel (Board member), as they review conference presentations and results of discussion sessions.

The conference was blessed by His Grace, Bishop Alexander of Toledo (then Locum Tenens of the Diocese of the Midwest). This conference re-cap has been blessed by His Grace Bishop Paul, Diocese of the Midwest.

Fr. Steven Tsichlis, of Irvine, California, shared his experiences as coordinator of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocesan program for the diaconate for the Metropolis of San Francisco.

Professor Susan Ashbrook Harvey, Chair of the Dept. of Religious Studies at Brown University, is also a tonsured reader at St. Mary’s Antiochian Orthodox Church in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

Sister Rebecca Cown, of New Skete Monastery, is a certified spiritual counselor and director.

Phyllis Zagano is author of numerous articles and reviews on the question of Catholic women deacons.

Valerie Karras has published numerous scholarly articles on the female diaconate and other women’s liturgical and ecclesiastical ministries.

Clio Pavlantos spoke of her work as a chaplain.

Caren Stayer drew on her PhD in Medieval and Byzantine History to help attendees understand the history of the deaconess.

Susan Ashbrook Harvey
is a tonsured chanter at St. Mary’s Antiochian Orthodox Church in Pawtucket, RI, and serves on the Eastern Orthodox–Roman Catholic Bilateral Theological Consultation for North America. She is the Willard Prescott and Annie McClelland Smith Professor of Religious Studies, and the Royce Family Professor of Teaching Excellence, at Brown University. Susan specializes in Syriac studies, early Christian history, and Christianity of the Byzantine and Syriac traditions, particularly with respect to women. She has received honorary doctorates from Grinnell College (Iowa), the University of Bern (Switzerland), and Lund University (Sweden), and is a past-President of the Orthodox Theological Society in America, and of the North American Patristic Society. A recipient of awards and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, National Endowment for the Humanities, Dumbarton Oaks Research Library, and others, she has published widely in academic venues on women in ancient Christianity, monasticism, the cult of saints, hagiography, and early Christian hymnography.

We are pleased to add Rev. Fr. Steven Tsichlis
to our list of distinguished speakers for the Women & Diaconal Ministry Conference. Fr. Steven Tsichlis is the pastor of St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church in Irvine, CA. He is the coordinator of the Archdiocesan program for the diaconate for the Metropolis of San Francisco. He studied at the University of Missouri, Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, Yale Divinity School and Fordham University. He is the former president of the Archdiocesan Presbyters Council of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese; a former president and member of the Board of Directors of Project Mexico; and a member of the advisory board for the Orthodox Peace Fellowship. He is married and has four children.
