Deaconesses Today

The process of reviving the order of deaconesses in the Orthodox Church is underway. In 2024, a deaconess was ordained in the Patriarchate of Alexandria in Zimbabwe, Archdeaconess Angelic-Phoebe Molen. The conversation about deaconesses continues to grow in the Orthodox Church around the world, and the St. Phoebe Center is hopeful that more deaconesses will be ordained in future years.

On May 2, 2024, Angelic Molen of Harare, Zimbabwe, was ordained Deaconess Angelic in the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and all Africa. She was elevated to archdeaconess two days later, with the full title: Archdeaconess Angelic-Phoebe Molen. Click here to read more!

The Armenian Orthodox Church is also in the process of discerning the role of the ancient order of deaconess for today. A deaconesses of the Kalfayan Sisterhood proclaims the Holy Gospel during the Divine Liturgy at the Armenian Cathedral in Istanbul.
