African Orthodox Women’s Grant

ABOUT THE AFRICAN WOMEN’S GRANT
All around the continent of Africa women participate in the life of the Orthodox Church. In roles such as catechist, church treasurer, theologian, and chanter, women from Kenya to Cameroon to Zimbabwe work to build up the Body of Christ.

Honoring the fact that women are richly engaged in African Orthodoxy, the St. Phoebe Center for the Deaconess wishes to support their efforts to acquire education and skills in order to better serve God. To this end, the St. Phoebe Center has established an African Orthodox Women’s Grant.

We invite you to join us in this endeavor with your donations. May God richly bless you for your support.

Grant Recipients

Leah Wambui Kogi
March 2025

Leah is organizing a multifaceted project. She is making soap and detergents, buying sanitary towels for girls, and keeping rabbits and chickens.

Anastasia Kithabile Moeketsi
March 2025

Anastasia is a social work student. She is deeply concerned about the social, emotional, and economic challenges faced by women in the Orthodox Church. In her application, Anastasia noted that many women lack access to education, economic opportunities, and social support, making them vulnerable to poverty, abuse, and marginalization.

After the completion of her degree, she plans to empower women by providing life skills training, mentorship, and counseling services. She wants to empower women in her church community to take control of their lives, make informed decisions, and become active agents of change.

From Anastasia:

I am very grateful for the love received from the St Phoebe Centre.  As I reflect back on the last semester, you have been my support both financially and in prayers. The Centre has been my family and has helped me in every way possible. I pray that you continue spreading the love that God gave you around the world and help other people like me also.”

St. Catherine Monastery, Uganda: Empowering Women and Girls
Febuary 2025

From the nuns at St. Catherine’s Monastery:

“We really don’t know how to express our gratitude enough about your donations against
sewing machine to poor women in our community, we are very excited with a little you
donated to our group and we have hope that you will support us with more projects as we
discussed in our meetings. Your support enabled us to provide electric sewing machine which is now in use for ever day training in the community.

As nuns of Orthodox in Uganda, our work is to help women, girls, Children and disabled
people, get skills and education and earn income to support them themselves without fail
.

With your support, we managed to provide 1 good sewing machine to our group which is
now the only sewing machines we have. This helped us to train women in time and we also have hope that you will continue supporting us for more sewing machines.

Our mission is to train 10,000 women in many projects and to support 5000 girls with school
requirements and tuition fees in our district and also to support them with starting capital to help them earn income for their families and support themselves and we have hope this will be done with your support.”

Zipporah Mwaura,
November 2024

From event organizer, Zipporah Mwaura:

“A few months ago, we started a journey as the Orthodox Church Mothers Union in Kenya, organizing a seminar on the role of women in the Orthodox Church. In this seminar, women were reminded that they are called to serve and not to be served; and in every service, they are to model after Christ – the servant leader.

The seminar was organized to empower women, inspire them, and boost their confidence as leaders of today, who are taking a vital role in the Orthodox Church in Kenya. Through real-world case studies, lessons presented by the facilitators, eye-opening exercises, and spirited discussion, women learned how to bring out the best in the roles and leadership assigned to them in the Orthodox churches and lead from a position of firmness, fairness, and quiet strength.

Women are looking forward to having more empowering and eye-opening seminars. May our Good Lord continue blessing St. Phoebe Center for the good work they are doing.”

Onthatile Thamaga,
October 2024

On her experience at Nelson Mandela University:

My time at Nelson Mandela University studying philosophy has been a deeply enriching experience. I have been able to deeply explore philosophical thought and gain more insight on answering the big questions about life. My studies in philosophy so far have given me the tools to analyze and understand the world around me in deeply profound ways. I have enjoyed looking into the ethical and metaphysical questions that arise when we deal with social justice, community and social cohesion, as well as spiritual well-being.

Receiving a grant from the St. Phoebe Center has been immensely important in my academic journey. Being able to study further and be part of the philosophy community at Nelson Mandela University has been such a rewarding experience as I get to connect with like-minded individuals who are passionate about philosophy and social justice. It has been invaluable in my academic journey and personal growth. I am very grateful for the support I have received in continuing my studies, and I am eager to continue with a strong sense of purpose and direction that is guided by philosophical inquiries and the mission of the Center.

Anastasia Kithabile Moeketsi,
May 2024

Anastasia Moeketsi will obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Cavendish University. Her area of study will focus on advancing social equity for women and girls in the African Orthodox community. Through the program, she will empower women to be self-reliant — discouraging child marriages, preventing teenage pregnancies, and standing up to abuse. She will also work with women who have recently lost their husbands (and breadwinners) to rebuild their lives emotionally and financially.

A note from Anastasia as she begins her studies:

Dear all members of St. Phoebe Center for the Deaconess,

I am very grateful for the love and support that you extended to me by offering this rare opportunity to get a scholarship to study at this prestigious university in Zambia. I promise to do my best and use all that knowledge that I shall get to support and upgrade the women in the Holy Orthodox Church.

Angelic Molen, February 2024

Angelic Molen applied for the St. Phoebe Center’s African Women’s Grant, committed to expanding her ministry. For years, she has worked to engage the Orthodox youth of Zimbabwe and build a foundation of pastoral care within her community.

With funding from the African Women’s Grant, Molen will pursue a university education in order to better serve her community in Harare, Zimbabwe. She has chosen to study Geography and Environmental Studies, placing the sanctity of Earth at the forefront of her work.

“The Earth is a sacred gift from God, “she says, “We must protect it from harm and live in harmony with the plants, animals, and every living thing.”

Noting the underrepresentation of African women in leadership positions, Molen has committed herself to using this degree as a means to empower her sisters in Christ.

“I will hold seminars and workshops for my fellow African Orthodox women to increase the rate of participation,” she says. “Environmental science and green innovation are vital to help solve one of the most complex challenges of our time… and women play an essential role.”

Women’s Leadership Conference in Kenya, January 2024

Recently, the Center made its first grant award to a Women’s Leadership Seminar in Kenya. On January 20, 2024, the Meru Deanery of the Orthodox Diocese of Nyeri and Mt. Kenya Region (Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa) held a women’s leadership seminar with funding from the St. Phoebe Center’s African Women’s Grant.

The seminar was necessitated by the fact that, out of twenty elected leaders in the deanery, fourteen are women including chairpersons, secretaries, and treasurers of the local parish council. These women needed leadership training to prepare them for their roles in parish life, including how to overcome challenges they face in leadership and how to plan for the parish effectively. Seventeen women along with three priests, including Fr. Dr. John Njoroge, attended the seminar.

Seminar participants sent their feedback:

Emily Kanorio, Secretary at Prophet Elias Church said, “This has been a fruitful day for us as leaders. It has never happened before. Normally when elected you are left to find your own way of leading but today we are all focused towards one goal. As a young woman in leadership, I have been empowered, now I hope even to study theology to be more competent as an Orthodox Church leader.”

Papathia Mary Kithinji, said, “We are thankful to God, St. Phoebe Center for the Deaconess, and our own Fr. Njoroge for this seminar. Empowering us women in leadership, is empowering not only the church but our communities and households– God bless you!”

A special thank you to our St. Phoebe Center donors who made this grant possible!
